How to Waste Time

Do you know how to NOT waste time? Really think about your answer first. In a culture of social media “pings” and feeling like everything has to be done NOW …. more of us actually waste time versus being productive.

The Eisenhower Box method has been tested again and again. It is the best method to use when preventing time from being wasted while boosting productivity. So, what is the Eisenhower Box method?

Basically, this method states one should separate actions based on four possibilities. The possibilities are:

Urgent and important (tasks you will do immediately).
Important, but not urgent (tasks you will schedule to do later).
Urgent, but not important (tasks you will delegate to someone else).
Neither urgent nor important (tasks that you will eliminate).

If you look at every single item that comes across your desk, iPhone, tablet, etc. and apply one of these four possibilities to it – you will not waste time. The Eisenhower Box method is all about assessing and addressing by making an immediate decision on every potential and actionable item.

For today, start apply this method and notice how much you get done and how quickly it gets done. I promise you the productivity in your life will go up and you still will have more time left at the end of the day.

Until tomorrow,

Your life as a publicist, how to get the most from it.

Being a publicist means you will have very little time to attend to yourself, but you need to.  I wanted to cover starting the day out to nurture yourself before you head to work to go to bat for others. So, here it goes!

First, you need to wake up 15 minutes earlier tomorrow than you did today. Why? To workout. Even if you already head to the gym at a different point in the day, wake up early and do 15 minutes (no more, no less) of jogging or walking around the neighborhood - whatever. Make sure you add this to your routine because it shakes off any extra glasses of wine from the night before, as well as helps to get the creative juices flowing.

Second, say two things out loud that you will get accomplished today. Why? Self affirmation is very powerful. People will screw up your schedule to be quite frank about things, just ask any PR employee. If you say two things out loud in the morning that you need and will get down, chances are they will be accomplished regardless of any schedule interruptions.

Finally, knock off any phone or in-person meetings that don't need to happen. People tend to spend more time talking about doing things vs. actually doing them. Meetings are a huge distraction in many cases. If a meeting isn't going to accomplish a decision during its capacity, skip it or cancel it. You should only call or attend meetings that 1.) stay within the time frame scheduled and 2.) will accomplish something by the end of the meeting. Discussion meetings are not needed. You can shoot a short email to a group of people and read their feedback in less time then it takes to actually walk to a meeting or call into one.

I hope this information helps you get ahead on what can be a great career.

Success & Your Event

It's no secret that I am on The Brand Masters' Tour right now.  I'm helping people understand the power of visibility by using branding and PR.  So far, we've gained the support of many corporate sponsors- including UBER!

So, what's my success secrets? I'm sharing them with you below;

Tip 1: Interaction is key, not presentations. No one likes to sit through presentations. We often have to, but ask someone if they are excited about a three hour presentation, they’re not. So, find ways to incorporate the audience and feed off of their energy to keep people engaged and happy.

Tip 2: Take care of your sponsors.  Often, ROI for a sponsor isn’t immediate and they tend to care about this factor more than media value. So, how do you keep them happy before, during or after an event? Treat them like gold. Sponsors are your event’s financial backbone. Send random gift cards, play their importance up big time to everyone, and continuously thank them for supporting you.

Tip 3: Don’t accept any media outlet. This is a rookie mistake. Sometimes we are so desperate for clippings (especially if we have bad clients), that we – as PR people- will credential any media outlet to cover the event. This isn’t good. In fact, it’s bad. Why would the mainstream media show up when they see stringer reporters (or worse, illiterate bloggers with an audience of 200 who want to be reporters) attending the event? If you want to add a “need to be here” feel to the media, make sure you are only offering so many credentials and offer VIP credentials to the right outlets. Don’t credential each and every outlet. It’s not worth it. It will ruin your reputation and when your clients (or sponsors) discover they are being interviewed by a small time reporter or stringer…. They WILL Be unhappy.

Still have questions? I can help you setup a successful event. Just ask!
